Description: Reusable sanitary pads intended for use during the postpartum period. These pads are typically larger and more absorbent than standard reusable menstrual pads.
Minimum lifespan: at least 200 washes.
The product shall consist of multiple layers, including a top sheet, a middle absorbent core made of cotton, polyester, and other absorbent fabrics, and a leak-proof bottom layer, typically polyurethane laminate (PUL). The top sheet shall be the primary absorbent layer and designed to transport fluid efficiently to the absorbent core beneath.
The top sheet may be manufactured from materials such as organic topped cotton or bamboo velour, hemp fleece, cotton flannel, cotton jersey, cotton fleece, or poly jersey. The product shall include secure fastening mechanisms, such as plastic buttons, waist straps, Velcro, or similar systems, to ensure firm attachment to underwear and prevent displacement during use.
The product shall be unscented only.
The pads shall be free from acids and alkalis, dust and particulate matter, unpleasant odours, colour bleeding, and fibre shedding. They shall also be free from chemical residues such as chlorine, herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, and azo dyes, in accordance with REACH regulations.
The total viable bacterial count, when tested in accordance with EN ISO 6887-1 or equivalent, shall not exceed 1,000 CFU per gram of sanitary pad/towel. The product shall be free from Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The product shall be suitable for soaking and thorough washing in water up to 60°C using soap or laundry detergent. After washing, it shall be capable of being dried completely and reused.
Wear time: Suitable for continuous use of 4–6 hours.
The pH of the extract shall be between 6 and 8.5 when tested according to EN ISO 3071, Method B.
Colour fastness: Minimum rating of 4 or higher.
Durability: The product shall withstand a minimum of 60 hand or machine washes. Seam lines shall be neat and free of loose threads. The product shall demonstrate dimensional stability, adequate tensile strength, and seam strength.
Colour options: Dark blue, black, purple, brown, or other dark shades.
Any claims regarding biodegradability or compostability shall be supported by independent third-party certification in accordance with applicable ISO/EN standards.
Materials: Multi-layer construction including organic cotton flannel (undyed and unbleached), 100% organic cotton, and a leak-proof layer.
Storage conditions: Appropriate storage conditions suitable for the product.
Instructions for use: Instructions shall be provided in English, Arabic, French, and Spanish. These shall include guidance on use, washing, and care, preferably via QR code or pictograms. Instructions shall also indicate the absorbent side, include any safety warnings, recommend wear time during menstruation, and provide guidance on when and how to dispose of the product.
